Top Boy

09 May 2019

Netflix is to relaunch the cult television crime drama series, Top Boy after being bought by Drake.

The rapper is injecting new life into the series and reigniting the passion for British street culture, after purchasing the rights to the show in 2017.

Firm-favourites Ashley Walters, Kano and Kane Robinson are making a comeback to the East London streets. However, resonant rapper Dave and lyrical narrator Little Simz, will be bringing a new audio dimension to the series.

Ashley Walters says: “Top Boy is a raw, real representation of street culture. It explores how these characters came to make the choices they make and gives the audience a behind-the-scenes look as to what is happening on our streets today.”

This resurrection project by the Canadian rapper was hinted at by Skepta in 2016 during a Beats 1 chat with Zane Lowe. It’s now being brought to life by Brian Eno and Michael Asante, scoring original tracks for its autumn release.

Netflix is the right network for the comeback if they’re to deliver on authenticity, says Walters. He adds: “The show doesn’t shy away from giving us the platform to tell our story. We can’t change things if we do not acknowledge it and understand it first.

“Netflix is the perfect platform for this show. There aren’t many networks who would be brave enough to keep it this real.”
