Scorcese’s The Irishman to become first Netflix big screen release

Martin Scorcese’s highly-anticipated passion project with Robert De Niro will be the first Netflix original film to get wide release in cinemas.

Due out this Autumn, The Irishman is a biographical crime drama bringing together Mob-movie elite, including Al Pacino and Joe Pesci.

The film tells the story of Frank Sheeran, a union official claiming to have killed union leader Jimmy Hoffa. It’s based the 1975 novel I Hear You Paint Houses by Charles Brandt – the homicide investigator to whom Hoffa confessed.

Scorsese says, “It’s an incredible honour that The Irishman has been selected as the opening night of the New York Film Festival.”

It will get its first open screening at the event on September 27.

The film is a narrative reflection of Hoffa’s life, rather than a real-time setting. It defines his ties to the mob and moments in his life leading up to the assassination.

“The Irishman is so many things: rich, funny, troubling, entertaining and, like all great movies, absolutely singular,” says Kent Jones, director of the New York film Festival.

Although announcing the project back in 2012, Robert DeNiro revealed to the Observer back then the film had been in the pipeline for many years before that.

When asked about plans at the time to reunite with the Italian-American director, Pacino responds: “Oh yeah, we’re working on something now. It’s called I Heard You Paint Houses. We’ve been trying to get it going for a couple of years and now we’re just trying to set a time.

“I’d play Frank Sheeran and Pacino would play Hoffa. Joe Pesci would be in it too.”

Scorsese and De Niro’s collaborations span nine feature films since 1973, as well as one short film.

Although its official trailer won’t be released until after the festival airing, Netflix has released a teaser:
